Rhymney - WHICHcraft
On Friday 28th October, Head for Arts worked with Rhymney Communities First to run WHICHcraft, a Halloween themed family craft event at Lower Rhymney Community Centre.
Over a hectic few hours, participants were able to try out a range of craft based activities whilst learning how to make a number of spooky accessories including spider hats, skeleton masks and ghostly lanterns.
Continuing with the craft theme, Head for Arts ran a training for trainers lantern making workshop in Rhymney a few weeks later. The lanterns produced will feed into the local lantern parade that is taking place at 4.30pm on Friday 9th December.

Corn Dollies
Community members from Senghenydd came along to this year’s Big Cheese Festival to learn how to make Corn Dollies with tutor Peter Oakley.
After a few hours of tuition in this forgotten craft, participants were able to help young visitors to the festival create simple star-shaped Corn
Dollies that they could take home.
More advanced Corn Dolly making sessions will be taking place in Senghenydd Community Centre from September onwards. This will enable community members to further develop their skills in this craft. If you would like come along to these sessions, please contact us for details.
It is hoped that some of the items created during the Corn Dolly sessions will feed into the Awen project – A Cultural Olympiad Project based in Caerphilly Castle and co-ordinated by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Arts Development Team.
For further information on the range of activities taking place as part of this exciting, participatory arts project, visit: http://www.awenproject.co.uk or contact the Arts Development Team on 01495 224425

Music Technology
Young people from Senghenydd Youth Drop In Centre (SYDIC) have been exploring their musical talents this summer by taking part in Head for Arts’ The Mix project.
The photograph shows Community Music Wales tutor, Neil Lewis, taking the group through their paces as part of the music technology project that was held in the centre during July.
Participants were able to experiment with playing a number of different instruments, including drums, guitar, keyboard and voice. By the end of the project, the group were able to jam the Zutons / Amy Winehouse classic Valerie.
Additional music based sessions aimed at those young people who wish to develop their skills further will be held in SYDIC during August.
