Valleys Girl

The Valleys Girl project engaged over 1,000 community members in the creation of a bilingual community play which was staged in four venues across the Head for Arts patch.

Each performance used drama, dance, music and digital media to represent the life of a ‘Valleys Girl’.  Every story portrayed in the performances had been generated in outreach sessions held in local communities.

The project brought people together from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, with outreach workshops and rehearsals being held in schools and youth clubs, Welsh language groups, libraries, mother and toddler groups, sewing groups and a day centre for people with multiple disabilities.

Valleys Girl had a positive impact on many participants, with 97% of those involved describing that they had gained new skills through participation in the project.

Valleys Girl gave me the opportunity to interact with young people with an interest in the arts –  as an eighty year old woman it’s great to meet young people with the same interests as me’
