COMMUNITIES - Training For Trainers

Head4Arts offers free training for trainer’s sessions in a range of artforms for community groups across the eastern Heads of the Valleys area.

The sessions are led by expert community arts practitioners who demonstrate arts skills and share creative ideas using simple techniques that can easily be replicated in a classroom or community setting without having to access specialist materials or equipment.

These training sessions are targeted at teachers, adults and older members of youth groups in order to help them develop skills that they can pass on within their own community to feed into local events and celebrations.

You can choose the focus of your training session from the list below:

• Mask Making
• Banner Making
• Lantern Making
• Storytelling
• Jewellery Making
• Costumer Making
• Felt Making

What do you need to do to book a session?

Head4Arts can provide Training for Trainers sessions completely free of charge, on the condition that you are able to provide the following:

• A venue in which the session can take place.
• A group of participants that consists of leaders / key volunteers from at least six different community groups in the area.
• Links with a local school and the guaranteed attendance of at least three teachers or classroom assistants (you could even consider holding the session from 4pm in a local school so that teachers can use this as a “twilight” INSET training session).

Training for trainers in practice…

In November 2008, 10 individuals attended a “lantern training for trainers” session in St Peter’s Church, Aberbargoed. Over the next few weeks, each individual went back to their community group to pass on the new lantern making technique they had learned. This led to lanterns being made just about everywhere in Aberbargoed – in the local primary school, at the coffee morning group, at a mother and toddler session, at the youth club etc.
In December, approximately 1,000 people attended the annual lantern parade – many of them carrying handmade lanterns that were created using the technique learned at the training session a month earlier.
